Money Where Your Mouth Is

“THAT'S A…”

I've been listening to Bob Goff's UnDistracted book. It's fire! Get it ASAP! So Bob took A YEAR and charged himself $500 for EVERY critical word that came out of his mouth. He has a funny story about a very expensive conversation! It got me thinking…. if you know me you know I HATE sarcasm. I think it's a way to be mean and while trying to be funny. I typically don't think it's funny and I just see it as a cheap shot. Also, I can be sarcastic… I know, sometimes it's funny… but in general…. that's my thought on it.

Anyway, I decided to take Bob up and start getting serious about how I use my words for criticism. I am a VERY analytical person, so this is a REAL call out. Top it off with the fact that I recently was really hurt by some friends gossiping about me (maybe for “good” reasons, but that's the thing that got me… is it really good?) The best thing that came to me from that situation is I think God showed me how much gossip sucks when it's about you. I repented of all the times I have gossiped…. I hate to say, it makes my stomach turn to think about it. So, I don't want to gossip anymore, ever. I am sure I will, but I don't want to. It's my goal to rid that of my conversations and what comes out of my mouth.

Next, Bob Goff is talking about criticism. YIKES! I am SUPER critical. Another hit. I am starting to think criticism is the twin to sarcasm, it's just a different angle. If sarcasm is the funny side of tearing people down then criticism is the intellectual side. I'm not saying stop thinking or caring or laughing. I am realizing the power of my words.

So I want my words to be words of love, hope, peace, encouragement… not sarcasm and criticism. I have written it on my hand for $10/word. It's changing the way I speak, which is changing the way I think.

It's like you can't become a morning person until you have a few dreadful weeks of getting up early. NOTE… sometimes the person I'm most critical of is myself. That's a charge too! I'm so curious how this may change my relationships with myself and others.

How much are your words worth?

Coming soon… the rice experiment!
It's not believable.
