THE STORY IN A TEACUP
What it’s about
Sydney Forrester is a clockmaker and tinker who would rather talk to gears than people. One day a veiled stranger walks into the shop she runs with Aunt Lottie, carrying an odd clock and news that Sydney has inherited Blakely House, the estate of a great-uncle she never met.
Blakely House sits on its own island off the Northumberland coast, in the wild North Sea. It seems almost alive, packed with Uncle Emmett’s inventions: guiding lights, mechanical creatures, rooms that appear and disappear, and an unfinished automaton Sydney can’t wait to get her hands on.
Not everyone is glad to see her. Two cousins, Dane and Tom, want the house for themselves. They suspect Sydney had something to do with Emmett’s suspicious death, contest the will, and may be trying to frame her. Her only sometimes-ally is André, the butler and former adventurer Emmett once pulled from a shipwreck. Then a stranger washes ashore with a surprise that changes everything, and Sydney has to prove she inherited her uncle’s brilliance along with his house.
Woven through it all are Emmett’s love letters to Sophie, a woman nobody on the island believes was ever real.
Spoiler alert: the questions below assume everyone has finished the book, including the ending.

KEEP THE CLOCK
Your one-hour game plan
Wind-up warm-up
5 min
Go around the table: If you inherited a mysterious house full of inventions, which one would you hope to find? A self-lighting hallway, a secret room, a mechanical pet, or a breakfast machine?
First impressions
10 min
- Thumbs up, sideways, or down? What hooked you, or what made it slow going?
- Blakely House feels alive. Was it charming, creepy, or both? Which room or invention stuck with you?
- How was Sydney a “clock put together differently, a clock specially designed”? Did you relate to that? CLUB PICK
The inheritance
10 min
- Who do you think should have inherited Blakely Manor and all its innovations? CLUB PICK
- Did you suspect anyone of Emmett’s death? When did you change your mind?
- Dane and Tom only saw the house’s value. Sydney cared about the man who built it. How did that difference shape who “won”?

15 min
- How do you feel about adventures? Would you have gone looking for Sophie? CLUB PICK
- What’s the biggest adventure you’ve experienced? CLUB PICK
- Sydney sensed God nudging her to leave her safe little shop. Has a nudge like that ever changed your direction?
- Emmett and Sophie’s letters run beside Sydney and André’s story. What did the older love story teach the younger one?
“Perhaps the scope of normal is wider than any of us believed.”
FROM SOPHIE’S LETTERS TO EMMETT
The Maker’s mark
15 min
- What does nature tell us about God’s character? How does it bear its Maker’s mark? CLUB PICK
- Sydney kept discovering who Emmett was through what he made. How is that like knowing God through His creation?
- What symbolism and deeper truths did you see scattered through the story and the alternate ending? CLUB PICK
- Sydney saw herself as broken and unwanted, yet her “flaws” became her gifts. Where have you seen that happen in your own life?
Bonus if time allows: Emmett rescued shipwrecked men and gave them a home. Who has done that for you?

TABLE TALK
Fun facts to drop between courses
- The island is off Northumberland, in the far north of England on the North Sea.
- The author pictured a real house she’d looked at while writing about Blakely House.
- Joanna and her husband spent their honeymoon in Scotland touring old estates, which sparked her love of houses with long stories.
- An automaton is a moving machine built to imitate a person or animal. Wealthy Victorians and Edwardians loved them as parlor wonders.
