How Do We Fight
the Darkness?

With light. And you already have access to it.

· · ·

I was walking out of church, ready to head to my car, when I saw her.

A girl — maybe twenty years old — sitting alone, crying. I had just left the restroom. My keys were in my hand. And I almost walked past her.

Almost.

But you can't just walk past tears like that. So I stopped. I asked if I could sit with her. And then I asked if I could pray.

She looked up and said, "The voice is just so loud."

"The voice is just so loud."

I asked her how long she'd been walking with Jesus. Seven years, she said. Baptized just two months ago. And yet here she was, consumed by a voice in her head — the same word, over and over. A curse word. Loud. Relentless. Exhausting.

I asked if I could put my hand on her back. She said yes. And I let her talk.

Then I prayed. Against the spirit of cursing. Against everything attached to it that wasn't of God. Out loud. By the name of Jesus, by His blood.

I asked if she wanted to pray too. She did.

"You know what's weird? I just had a picture in my head of two huge angels taking a big monster out that door — and the door shut. And it can't come back anymore."

That's right, I told her. That's exactly right.

We prayed God's Word over her. I encouraged her to get into her Bible — eat the Word. Memorize it. Sing worship. Fill her mind with God. She laughed — a real laugh — like something had lifted.

Because something had.

I Learned This Fight in My Own Living Room

When my kids were in middle school and early high school, I started noticing something. They'd come home defeated. Saying things like I'm dumb or I want to give up or just... check out completely. And something in me knew — this isn't my kid. This isn't who they are.

There was something between us. The kingdom of darkness was at play.

So Scott and I started praying differently. Not just God bless my kids prayers. We started naming what we saw — the hopelessness, the lust, the despair, the pull toward death — and we prayed against it. Cast it out. One observation at a time. We fought for our kids in prayer.

And things shifted.

The Enemy Is Real. So Is Your Authority.

Scripture doesn't sugarcoat this. There is a kingdom of darkness. There is an enemy whose entire mission is to kill, steal, and destroy. He is a liar. A tempter. A baiter. He accuses and condemns — constantly.

But here's what I want you to really sit with: Jesus cast out demons and kept walking. It was light work for Him. Not dramatic. Not rare. Just authority, exercised.

And that authority? It belongs to you too.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:8–9

So How Do We Fight?

The answer is beautifully simple, even when living it out is hard:

  • 1 We fight darkness with light. God is light. In Him there is no darkness at all. You don't have to muster up more willpower — you tap into His power.
  • 2 We steep ourselves in His Word. Like hot tea. You don't just dip in and out — you let it saturate you. The Word is alive. It cuts through the noise.
  • 3 We pray with authority. Not performance. Not perfect words. Just the name of Jesus — His blood, His truth — spoken out loud over what you see.
  • 4 We fill our minds intentionally. Worship. Scripture. The things of God. Because whatever you fill the space with matters. Leave the house swept and empty, and something will come back. Fill it with light.
  • 5 We receive grace, not shame. Confess your sin and He forgives. He scatters it as far as the east is from the west. His love, grace, and mercy will follow you around all the days of your life.

Eat the Word. Start Here.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

John 1:12

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

We have an enemy who is playing to kill. And we have the power of the living God available to us every single morning we wake up.

You have to tap in.

Don't walk past the girl crying alone. Don't walk past the defeated look in your kid's eyes. Don't walk past the voice in your own head that's been too loud for too long.

You have authority. Use it.

Created. Called. Fully Alive.

You were made for this fight.

And you don't fight alone. If you're in a hard season and need someone to pray with you, I'm here.
