Welcome to Book Club with Jen Severn
I have just finished a class on Shadow Work. My first book of the
year was a manual! I continue to pursue my internal work on emotional
intelligence and how I show up in this world. I am working to understand my
actions and reactions to simple encounters in my life and that perhaps they
have deep roots. It's a work of love. I do believe as I become more aware, I am
more equip to be present for my husband, children and friends. This is hard
work and deep work of the heart, mind, soul and strength. It's not a journey
for everyone, yet I feel so grateful to be involved in this work. I have
experienced great healing from Shadow Work. I consider it a hammer. Not the
only tool on my belt, but a useful one indeed. It's making me a better mom. No
doubt. I must be willing to engage in working on me in order to show up the way
I'd like to in this world. It's an unending work, rewarding and great!
This book took me away from today and planted me back to the time our
country was founded.
America's First Daughter by Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie
I LOVED this book. First, have you listened to the music from
Hamilton the musical? If you have or have been lucky enough to see the show,
you will find this book falls in the same time period. You get an opportunity
to see the same era from different lenses. I found it a fascinating compliment
to Hamilton. This book is about the life to Thomas Jefferson told through the
eyes of his daughter. I listened to it on audio book and greatly enjoyed it.
The imagery made me want to fly to Paris. I desire to take my family to
Monticello the home of Thomas Jefferson. This book drew me into the life of a
diplomat, Virginia plantation owner, and stakeholder in the American and French
revolutions, the love, hardships and the politics of this era.
Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling
Mindy reads this book for the audio version. I loved it. She makes
Hollywood beauty within reach from spray tans, hair extensions, to run-around
shoes and slutty heals. She talks about why to smile and how she responds to
disappointments. It's real life talk, like we are friends, but we aren't. I
loved her address to the students at Harvard Law; she's brilliant. She's funny
and entertaining. Thank you Mindy for this daily dose of life! I think you
should listen to this one!
Getting Noticed by Lindsay Teague Moreno
Lindsay is one of my favorite leaders of women in the US right
now. She is an encouraging woman around the states to get out there, lead, work
and have fun while you are doing it. She gives practical wisdom for busy moms
with a drive for more. JUST LIKE ME! LOVE! If you are a momtrepreneuer you must
grab this book. It's exclusively sold on Amazon. You won't regret it! My
favorite chapter is the social media must haves. Lindsay is crazy smart and I'm
constantly learning from her. LOVE.
To Sell is Human by Daniel H. Pink
I read the abridged version of this book. I learned a few
fantastic things. Selling today is WAY different than it used to be. Today,
there is no secret information. The buyer can get all the information they want
thanks to the Internet. The relationship between the buyer and the seller is
much different today. Good questions to ask are: How will the buyer’s life
improve? After this sale will the world be a better place? If the answer is no,
to either of these questions you are doing something wrong. I read this book
because I have recently fallen in love with essential oils and I am now selling
them. I don't ever want to be a weird, annoying, creepy sales person. The fact
is these essential oils are changing my life for the better and if you are
interested in trying them I'm here to help. That said, there is a TON of stigma
around sales, so I'm educating myself. Good read!
One More Thing by B.J. Novak
This book is different from any other book I have ever read. Have
you read it? Did you like it? It's right between hilarious and annoying for me.
He told a hilarious story on a sex robot that comes to life. It was ridiculous and funny. This book takes
thoughts or ideas, like, if I won the cereal box contest… and then plays them
out with a twist. If Elvis was alive, dead, alive, dead and then tells the
story as if it was. It's interesting, but I had a hard time getting through it.
It just didn't quite feel worth the time for me. I think that may make me
really lame, not smart or just not that appreciative of a very smart and funny
human. I wanted to love it.
